Here we are again then.
There was a distinct feeling of deja vu this morning.
The same flight, just two weeks later. It was a lovely morning as we made our way from the Sofitel at LHR5 to the terminal and thankfully, this week, everything was on time and to schedule.
As was - shhhhhh - third time lucky, our luggage! (phew) We still worry about that but can’t help feeling that the worst of the luggage issues are over. Or?
Whilst my Hero went off to get the car sorted out, I looked over the same balcony as I’d looked over last week and took a photo. Only when I downloaded it later did I notice the strange colouration - looks like a swimming pool, doesn’t it?
This weekend, we’re based in Luzern, for the opera premiere we’re going to tomorrow evening is in a small town nearby. We checked into a long time favourite hotel here by the river and took advantage of the welcome glass of prosecco, sitting in the sunshine for a while, overlooking the old wooden bridge.
Cheers! (It came with three small dishes of nibbles: olives, cheese crackers and gummi bears!)
Getting here was a bit of an adventure, as it involved driving through the old town and through narrow pedestrian streets. After sorting ourselves out and settling into our room we headed out. initially to have a wander around and stretch our legs but then later to find somewhere for supper.
We have always loved Luzern and have been here many times, but its charm never diminishes.
We love the fountains and remember when Edward was small, because he loved jumping up there and taking a drink of that fresh, cool water.
We walked down to the bridge by the lake and watched the paddle steamer Uri from more or less the same spot as, some 35 years ago my Hero complained of stomach ache. Less that 24 hours later, he was in a hospital not so far away having his appendix removed. We have history here!
Thankfully, no such drama tonight! We decided it was time to begin to look for somewhere to eat and turned back into the old town, noticing as we did that the sky was getting rather dark.
Rejecting a smoky and rather touristy spot, we spotted a more likely place around the corner. The thing was, they didn’t open for another fifteen minutes. We’d heard one or two pretty loud claps of thunder and wondered if we’d stay dry. We had neither coats nor umbrellas with us.
It was fairly easy to find distractions for those fifteen minutes, including this jeweller’s window which looked directly into the workshop. But one or two large drops of rain were starting to fall and taking shelter under a canopy, we willed the Fritschi to hurry up and open!
We just made it! No sooner had we scurried inside as the rain started to fall than the heavens opened and there was a cloudburst. Good timing or what!?
We ordered a couple of beers to be going on with whilst the kitchen got going, not minding one bit that we might have to wait fifteen minutes or so for food.
It was well worth waiting for! Freshly cooked and very tasty too. I chose the Bündner Rösti - home made rösti with sour cream and air-dried ham.
My Hero’s Sennenrösti, served with melted cheese, crispy bacon and a fried egg on top hit the spot too. Suffice to say we both were more than happy with our choices and left feeling utterly stuffed!
Thankfully, by the time it came to leave, the rain had passed over and we had a dry walk back to our hotel through relatively empty streets.
We’ve identified somewhere for supper on Sunday too! I can’t believe we’ve not had geschnetzeltes yet (my favourite) and was eager to find somewhere that featured it on their menu. Just don’t look at the price… (1 CHF = £1 qpprox)
For that matter, don’t look at any of the prices! Just enjoy being here and feel thankful.
We do. We are. And the best time to go shopping is when everything’s closed!
So, for now, from our beautiful spot in Luzern, we’ll say goodnight!
